what to expect

Your first few weeks at trentbarton will get you up to speed, providing you with all the skills and support you need to be a really good bus driver. We are looking forward to welcoming you to the team.

  • sign your contract and agree a start date - if you have any questions, please do let us know.

  • company induction - to begin your journey with us, you'll attend a company induction and learn all about our company standards. During the first few days, you'll receive your handbook, uniform and temporary staff pass (whilst we get your permanent one created with a lovely photo of you).

  • tests - in the first few days you'll be given a theory book (on loan) to practice for your test. You can practice hazard perception on our computers in the theory test room. Later during this week, you will take your theory, hazard perception and case study tests.

  • Mod 4 (walk around vehicle checks) - upon successful completion of your tests, you'll then be allocated a driving instructor to practice your Mod 4 (walk around vehicle checks) before being put through the test with our designated Driving Examiner, Clive.

  • Mod 3 - once you have passed Mod 4, you'll then work with your driving instructor again to pass your Mod 3 (practical driving) test. This typically takes place between weeks 6-8 of starting with us.

  • depot and mentorship - once you have passed, you'll be sent to your chosen depot and be partnered with a mentor until you are ready to be out on your own.

  • training log and health & safety - during these weeks you'll work through your training log, including health & safety and various other subjects related to the job. These include, but aren't limited to, bus familiarisation, ticket machine training, and route learning.

  • fully trained and ready - when your mentor is satisfied you are competent to work on your own, a member of our team will go for a ride out with you and 'pass you out' if they feel you are confident and competent to go alone. At this point, you are deemed a really good trentbarton bus driver - congratulations!

really good service awards
2024

Every year we hold our annual awards, where we celebrate all the amazing things our team do.

But we're not just there to have a good time. It is important for us to celebrate and reward those members of our team that have excelled in their job and have gone that extra mile.

Our success is not just a result of our hard working drivers, it's also driven by talented young apprentices, dedicated engineers, committed admin staff and IT whizz kids who all play their part in steering us in the right direction.

The really good service awards ceremony was hosted by radio presenter Andy Miller and featured as star speaker the Celebrity Masterchef 2023 winner and ‘Go Compare’ singer Wynne Evans. An “absolutely faultless” bus driver has won the top prize in trentbarton’s 2023-24 really good service awards.

it's official, we have the best bus drivers in the country

Our trentbarton drivers have been judged by customers as the best in the country, coming top out of 55 bus operators in the England-wide survey by the independent watchdog Transport Focus of more than 35,000 bus journeys.

In the Your Bus Journey survey and report, our drivers were the national number one for satisfaction, with 93 per cent of customers surveyed saying they were satisfied or very satisfied with their bus driver.

We have been ranked sixth out of 55 operators in the league table for overall journey satisfaction, with 87 per cent of customers surveyed saying they were satisfied or very satisfied, just four percentage points off the top spot. And we were also in the top ten for satisfaction with value for money.

Tom Morgan, trentbarton’s managing director, said: “An outstanding driver is what makes an everyday bus journey a great experience, so for our drivers to be the best in the country is a fantastic achievement.”

trentbarton heartlands of Greater Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire also performed well in the survey. Nottingham was named top city in the UK for bus passenger satisfaction and Nottinghamshire was crowned the top county.
